SUPERIOR COURT OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA, COUNTY OF VENTURA. CASE NUMBER 2016013473 F A. PENAL CODE SECTION 23 BAIL RECOMMENDATION HEARING. SUBJECT VOLUNTARILY SURRENDERED DEA PRIVILEGES TO WRITE PRESCRIPTIONS FOR SCHEDULE II, III, IV, & V MEDICATIONS.

Doctor suspected of overprescribing painkillers

Members of the Ventura County Interagency Pharmaceutical Crimes Unit searched an Oxnard medical office last week to find information on a doctor who, police said, has supplied large quantities of prescription painkillers to drug dealers and users in the area.

Police seized numerous medical files during the Oct. 27 search as part of an investigation targeting Dr. Adam Sherman of Camarillo that began several months ago.

Police said they believe the 44-year-old physician overprescribed opiates and other drugs to patients without medical necessity. The investigation is ongoing.

“Our hope by releasing information (about the search warrant) is to (connect with) people who had contact with Dr. Sherman in either a favorable or unfavorable way,” said Detective Micah Weilbacher of the pharmaceutical crimes unit. “It was simply to seek information for our investigation, whether it is positive or negative.”

Sherman has not been arrested and continues to see patients at his Oxnard office.

The pharmaceutical crimes unit, a task force that works to combat the transfer of legal prescription medication to the illegal market, has worked on many cases in which doctors cater to those with prescription drug addictions.

Weilbacher declined to comment on the specifics of the investigation but said prescription drug abuse is rampant.

“It’s not just something our office sees. It is a nationwide epidemic,” he said. “The number of prescription drug deaths from overdoses surpasses that of illicit drug overdoses by the thousands.”

Doctor enters plea in criminal case

A Camarillo doctor has pleaded not guilty to felony counts accusing him of illegally furnishing prescriptions.

Dr. Adam Bradley Sherman, 46, entered his plea at his arraignment April 26 in Ventura County Superior Court.

Sherman is charged with one felony count of furnishing a controlled substance, one felony count of unlawful controlled substance prescription activity and one count of prescribing a controlled substance substance not in the regular practice of medicine, Senior Deputy District Attorney Derek Malan said.

During an investigation leading to Sherman’s arrest, members of the county’s Interagency Pharmaceutical Crimes Unit served a search warrant at Sherman’s Oxnard office in October.

Detectives seized files and “other items of evidentiary value” from the office, police said in a news release that month.

Sherman was arrested April 12 at his office and was booked into the Ventura County Jail. He was released the following day after posting $50,000 bail.

He is due in court on May 10 for a trial disposition conference, Malan said Tuesday, May 3. (LINK) — 05/06/2016
